Indoor futsal goalkeepers need a shoe that grips a smooth court during short lateral movements but still releases predictably when the foot rotates. What do the Futsal Laws require?
FIFA’s Futsal Laws of the Game list footwear as compulsory equipment and prohibit dangerous items. They do not prescribe a specific outsole pattern. The referee can order unsafe footwear to be removed, while the competition or facility may require clean, non-marking soles.
FIFA also operates a quality programme for futsal surfaces because court systems differ in friction, deformation and ball behaviour. A shoe that feels controlled on one hall floor can behave differently on another, especially when dust, moisture or surface wear changes the available traction.
Indoor and futsal shoes
Indoor shoes use a flat rubber outsole with tread grooves rather than studs. The large contact area allows the rubber to interact directly with a smooth sports floor. Many models use gum rubber, while others use coloured non-marking compounds.
The outsole should provide enough friction for the first goalkeeper push without creating an abrupt stop during rotation. Research on futsal surfaces shows that structural and friction differences between courts affect perceived traction and change-of-direction performance, so there is no universal “grippiest” shoe for every hall.

TF shoes should not be used on a smooth wooden, vinyl or synthetic sports-hall court. The nubs reduce even floor contact and can create unpredictable grip. Some venues also prohibit them to protect the surface.
Do not confuse an indoor building with an indoor court. The correct outsole is determined by the playing surface under the foot, not whether there is a roof.

Why goalkeeper movements matter
Futsal goalkeepers work in a small area with rapid changes between set position, lateral blocking, low saves, standing recovery and distribution. The floor–shoe interface is repeatedly loaded in several directions rather than only during straight running.
A study of futsal movements found the highest plantar pressure at the medial forefoot during shuffle and sprint tasks and at the medial heel during the planted penalty-kick task. Different shoes also produced different whole-foot pressure values. The study was small, but it supports testing the exact shoe during goalkeeper-specific movement instead of judging comfort while standing.
Fit and construction
The heel should remain secure, the midfoot should not slide and the toes should lie normally. Futsal shoes often fit close to improve ball contact, but painful toe compression or numbness is not necessary for performance.
A reinforced toe area can help with repeated floor contact and distribution. The sole should remain flexible enough for a low set position, while the heel counter and sidewalls should resist unwanted foot movement during lateral push-offs.
Cushioning is useful only when it remains stable. A very soft or tall midsole can feel comfortable while walking but unstable during a fast block or recovery. The best choice balances underfoot comfort with a low, controlled platform.
Grip, dust and moisture
Dust is a common reason an otherwise suitable indoor sole begins to slide. Wipe the outsole with a clean damp cloth before the warm-up and again when necessary. Do not apply sticky substances that could damage the floor or violate venue rules.
Small wet areas can change traction suddenly. Stop and alert the referee or facility staff rather than attempting full-speed goalkeeper movements across moisture. The surface should be made safe before play continues.
Goalkeeper court test
- Check that the sole is clean and permitted by the facility.
- Hold the set position for thirty seconds and assess forefoot pressure.
- Perform ten controlled lateral pushes to each side.
- Complete five low saves per side and recover quickly.
- Practise split blocks, crossover steps and short accelerations.
- Pass, throw and kick the ball from normal goalkeeper positions.
- Stop if the foot slides repeatedly, catches during rotation or moves inside the shoe.
Build speed progressively. The first maximum-effort movement should not be the first real traction test.
Can outdoor boots be used?
FG, AG and SG boots should not be used on standard indoor courts. Studs cannot make even contact with the floor and may damage it. They can also create instability because the player balances on a limited number of hard contact points.
